Corrugated and ribbed metal siding
Exposed-fastener wall panels are the standard cladding on farm buildings and shops for the same reasons they are the standard roof: cheap, fast, fire-safe and tough. In the last decade they have also become a favourite on modern houses and cabins, run vertically in a dark colour or left in bare Galvalume. The panels are the same; what changes on a house is the care at the openings and the base.
- Fastening
- exposed, colour-matched
- Gauge
- 26 or 24
- Finish
- SMP, PVDF or bare
Strengths
What it does well
- The least expensive metal cladding
- Large panels cover a shop wall in a day
- Stocked locally in standard colours, cut to length
- 26 gauge shrugs off farm life; 24 gauge for houses
- Honest industrial look that suits modern design
Trade-offs
What to weigh up
- Visible screws, and each one is a point to check in 15 to 20 years
- Thin panels dent and show every bump in the wall behind
- Needs well-planned flashings at windows or it looks rough
- Bare Galvalume marks and fingerprints until it weathers
Detail
Why corrugated walls are quoted on site
A corrugated wall is a different job from a corrugated roof: a wall has far more openings and corners per square foot, and a shop wall on girts is a different animal from a house wall on rainscreen. So rather than borrow a roof rate, we measure the building and quote it. On a plain shop wall the number is low; on a house with many windows it approaches the standing seam price because the flashings are the same.
Price
Priced after we measure
Openings, corners and wall height decide a siding price more than the panel does, so we measure the walls and count the windows before quoting.
