Snow guards, skylights and roof accessories

Snow slides off a metal roof. In most of the Lower Mainland that happens two or three times a winter, and it will take a gutter, a hedge or a car with it if the roof is not fitted with snow retention above walkways, entries and anything you park. We install clamp-on systems that grip the seam without a single hole, replace skylights while the roof is open, and fit seam clamps for solar panels so a future array never needs a roof penetration.

  • Snow guards clamp-on, no holes in the panels
  • Skylights replaced while the roof is open
  • Chimneys crickets and counter-flashing
  • Solar seam clamps, no penetrations

The work

Snow retention done properly

Cheap stick-on pads and bent sheet-metal stops bend, fold and tear off, and when they fail they take the snow and the gutter with them. Engineered clamp-on bar systems grip the standing seam with set screws and are rated for the load. We place them above doors, walkways, driveways, decks, gas meters and heat pumps, and over the eave above any gutter on a roof that slides. On exposed-fastener roofs the brackets screw through the rib into the purlin.

Skylights are the other common penetration. A metal roof is the right time to replace a 20-year-old skylight, since the curb and flashing are built once. We flash skylights, chimneys and vents in matching metal with a cricket above anything wider than about 30 inches so water and snow split around it.

What our quote includes

  • Snow guard layout drawn on the roof plan, with the load it is sized for
  • Clamp-on hardware for standing seam, through-fastened brackets for ribbed panels
  • Skylight curbs built to the panel height, with saddle flashings
  • Solar seam clamps and rail layout if you are planning panels
  • Chimney crickets and counter-flashing cut into the mortar
  • Matching ridge, hip and gable caps
Watch for: Snow guards glued to the panel, or none at all above a front door. The first wet March snow decides whether that was a good idea.

Worth knowing

Solar and metal roofs

A standing seam roof is the best roof to put solar on: panels mount to the seams with clamps, so the roof is never drilled, and the roof outlasts two generations of modules. If solar is in your plans, tell us. We will leave the right seams clear and can install the clamps and rails with the roof.

Questions

Snow guards, skylights and roof accessories questions

Do I really need snow guards in the Lower Mainland?

Above entries, walkways, driveways, decks, gas meters and heat pumps, yes, anywhere in the region. Snow slides off metal in a sheet a few times a winter even in Richmond. On the North Shore, in the Tri-Cities hills and east of Abbotsford, they also protect gutters along the whole eave.

Can I put solar panels on a metal roof later?

Yes, and standing seam is the best roof for it: panels mount to the seams with clamps and the roof is never drilled. Tell us if solar is in your plans and we will keep the right seams clear and can fit the clamps with the roof.
